Escape Studios:July's Free Tutorial - Creating Realistic Materials in Maya

This month's free tutorial has been developed by Mark Spevick, our VFX tutor, and looks closely at the mib_colour_mix node. This tool enables you to create never ending material combinations to enhance the realism of your work. Starting right at the beginning, we'll look at shader networks in Maya, how materials are assigned to geometry and most importantly the Shading Group Node. We'll also discuss a number of the attributes and Mental Ray specific options so that you understand the importance of this node when it comes to creating your own custom shaders.

What Else Will I Learn From This Tutorial?
You'll learn to work with two MIA materials and the mib_colour_mix node, how to combine them together into a network and assign to simple primitive geometry. The mib_colour_mix node is not immediately obvious in its functionality, so we'll assign a number of Maya and Mental Ray materials to achieve a blended result. This repetition will guarantee that you fully understand the workflow, the options available and why things may go wrong.
